Greek Police Arrest Ring of Immigrant Smugglers

police_1Five people who were above suspicion have been arrested by theĀ Greek police Internal Affairs Department, with charges of immigrant smuggling.
Specifically, two retired mariners aged 67 and 52 years old, a 42-year-old woman who was a bank employee, a 50-year-old police sergeant who worked in the Attica police department, and a 50-year-old retired officer of the Coast Guard.
The charges that have been filed against them include felony offenses of organizing and participating in a criminal organization, breaches of the legislation regarding immigrant entry, social integration of third country nationals in Greek territory, and breaches of the legislation for the prevention and suppression of money laundering.
The file also includes two more people who are wanted by Greek police. They are two brothers, Syrian nationals, aged 45 and 48 years old, who have also been charged for violating the law on narcotics.
The defendants smuggled illegal immigrants from Turkey by sea and then used cars, buses and trucks to transport them to various regions of Ā Greece and other countries in Europe.
Each illegal immigrant had to pay a fee ranging from 2,000 to 3,000 euros to the criminal organization in order to be smuggled in the country.
