Greek Weightlifting TeamThe athletes of the 2008 Greek weightlifting team and their coaches were on Friday acquitted of doping charges dating back to the spring of 2008.
There were 25 defendants involved in the case and they were charged with administering illegal performance-enhancing drugs to athletes but also with the manufacture, sale, supply and possession of illegal substances.
The case came to court in April 2008 when it was disclosed that during unannounced doping checks by WADA, ordered by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) on 7 March 2008, 11 of the 13 athletes in Greece ‘s weightlifting team had tested positive for illegal substances.
The defendants stated in their defense that they were completely unaware that the preparations imported from China contained illegal substances. This statement was also used by the public prosecutor in court, who asked that the defendants be cleared of all charges.
