Bruxelles: Athens Camerata Opening Greek EU Presidency


The music launch of the Greek EU presidency could not have found a better representative than the Armonia Atenea, The Friends of Music Orchestra, who will host a concert in Brussels inaugurating the festivities.

The concert, will be held on January 14, at the Palais de BOZAR (Palais des Beaux-Arts) in Brussels with period instruments and under the direction of Greek conductor George Petrou. It will mark the official opening of the Greek Presidency to the Council of Europe.

The ensemble will present a selection of arias and excerpts focusing on Greek mythology and baroque operas coming from Western civilization and associated with Greek heritage. Some of the featured composers are Händel, Haase, Vivaldi, von Gluck and Bach.

Three professional and experienced lyrical voices, soprano Myrsini Margariti, mezzo-soprano Mary-Ellen Nesi and mezzo-soprano Irini Karaianni, will take up the task of representing Greece at the concert.

Armonia Atenea, the international name of the Athens Camerata founded in 1991, visits Brussels after enjoying great success and garnering international recognition in 2013. The concert will open with the Ouverture by George Friederich Händel’s opera “Allesandro,” an internationally acclaimed production that has won many awards.

The concert will also feature excerpts from the operas “Arianna in Creta” by Händel, “Antigono” by Gluck, “L’Olimpiade” by Paisiello, “Phaethon” by Lully, “Il Giustino” by Vivaldi, “Orphée” by Gluck, “Themistocle” by Bach, “Artemisia” by Hasse and “Iphigénie en Aulide” by Gluck.
