Varympompi, Thrakomakedones in Flames

41459102ABA804116C4587321945106BA big fire broke out at 10:20 in the evening of August 5 at Varympompi while fire-fighters are struggling with the strong winds (wind force is 5 on the Beaufort scale). Varympompi is a suburban community, part of the municipality of Acharnes, East Attica. According to latest information by the Fire Department, the fire was put under control.
A number of 122 fire-fighters, 61 fire trucks, 20 municipality vehicles  and five water-carrying trucks offered by citizens are participating in the operation of extinguishing the large fire along with ten aircraft and three helicopters. One house has been destroyed so far.
Ninety soldiers on the spot are trying to form firewalls. The Parnitha National Park is not under threat.
Shortly after four in the morning, the fire started to approach the town of Thrakomakedones in East Attica and the municipal authorities called citizens to abandon their houses.
A unit of the Division Against Arson Crime is at the scene investigating how the fire broke out, as there are indications of arson.
