Telegraph Praises Crete’s Eternal Lure

creteThe British newspaper The Telegraph has cited 10 Greek islands as perfect vacation spots, including Crete, which it ranks among the top 100 spots in the world as a destination for visitors. Athens, not known for its charm or beauty, but which has a buzz, also made the list.

In the report analysts looked at a number of criteria: the place, the history, the appropriate season to visit them, information about the food, accommodations, museums and such.

The newspaper, wanting to show how rich the island of Crete is and that it meets all the previous criteria, says it is, “A big or unique Island, Crete is itself a separate country. Cradle of the Minoan civilization, Crete produces more history than it can consume at a local level.”

Today Crete produces a surplus of food products due to the higher crop season. The coastline, the sandy beaches of Crete are superior, with clean waters. It also has a variety of attractions, including chapels of the 14th and 15th Centuries with renowned frescoes, Minoan palaces and hiking paths and its natural beauty.

The report also praises other Greek islands such as Naxos, Paros, Corfu, Hydra, Patmos, and Mykonos, advertisements for Greece which expects a record-breaking 17 million visitors this year after a disappointing 2012 in which would-be tourists were frightened off by images of protests, strike and riots against austerity measures.
