Athens Alter Summit Fights Cuts

alter summitThe Alter Summit will take place in Athens on June 7-8 featuring social movements, syndicats and non-governmental organizations from all around Europe whose slogan is: “Stop cuts policy before it destroys democracy.”
As reported in an article of the German newspaper Tageszeitung of Berlin, Alter Summit’s organizers talk about a meeting of high symbolism, aiming at converting Greece, which “has become a laboratory for the destructive cuts policy,” into “the workshop of resistance” although three years of protests, strikes and riots against austerity measures did nothing to stop them and most Greeks have given up trying.
Some 5,000 participants are expected, including syndicalists and scientist,  such as sociologists Elmar Altvater and Gerhard Bausch, as well as former SPD MP, economist Sigrid Skarpelis-Sperk who pointed out that the situation in Europe is becoming more  turbulent and invited “anyone who can, to visit Athens, because Europe needs a public conversation concerning a joint future of solidarity and democracy.”
