Man Charged With Abusing Schoolgirls

schoolgirls_ManGreek police said they have arrested a 40-year-old man in western Athens and charged him carrying out “indecent acts” on 21 schoolgirls over a five-year period, which would be a repeat offense as they said he had served time in jail for similar offenses against girls under 12 years old but was released.
Authorities said the suspect, who was not identified, followed the girls home from school and approached them dressed as a police officer pretending to be investigating robberies and drug offenses. There was no information on whether he was also charged with impersonating an officer.
The man is alleged to have approached girls aged 8 to 14 as they were leaving school and with following them on a number of different motorcycles, always helmeted, to the entrance of their apartment blocks.
He followed them into the buildings and, after showing them papers indicating he was investigating a burglary at their school or drug offense, led them to an isolated communal part of the apartment block where he carried out unspecified indecent acts on them.
Police said that the man had been arrested twice before between 1995 and 2005, for offenses against “the sexual freedom and dignity” of children under 12 years of age, for which he was jailed.
He was arrested by the Attica police force’s protection of minor’s unit after approaching an under-18-year-old Petralona resident and carrying out “indecent” acts on her. He was taken to the Athens misdemeanours court where he faced criminal charges.
