SYRIZA Leads Poll, So Does Samaras

ekloges_psifodeltia_533_355In a continuation of polls showing the ambivalence of Greeks, the major opposition Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) is maintaining a slight lead over ruling New Democracy, but the Conservative leader, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras is a runaway favorite to lead the country.
Samaras has 47.4 percent to only 32.4 percent for SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras, his constant critic over austerity measures the government is imposing on the orders of international lenders, according to a poll taken the agency Marc for Alpha TV. But more than 20 percent of respondents said neither.
Frequent polls have shown the parties taking turns leading the pack but with Samaras far ahead of Tsipras. At the same time, Greeks say they don’t want the austerity measures but want the bailout monies and want to stay in the Eurozone, a contradiction in terms.
SYRIZA has 23.4 percent support, an increase of 0.3 percent over February, while backing for New Democracy slid 0.2 percent to 22.6 percent. Given a margin of error, the parties are essentially tied with a miniscule difference between them. Essentially, the poll shows voters want SYRIZA in power, but not Tsipras, which can’t happen. To the question who would win the next elections, 44.8 percent say SYRIZA compared to 36.2 percent for New Democracy though.
The neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party remains third with 9.5 percent, with PASOK one of Samaras’ coalition partners, at fifth and falling at 5.6 percent, a loss of more than 38 percent from its triumph in 2009’s elections as new leader Evangelos Venizelos is overseeing its near demise. His party is barely ahead of the Independent Greeks which have 5.4 percent, and are followed by the government’s other junior partner, the tiny Democratic Left (DIMAR) at 4.7 percent and the Communists (KKE) dead last at 4.4 percent.
