Greece has received no official request or communication from Washington regarding the possible removal of U.S. Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle, government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said Tuesday, following remarks by President Donald Trump that he was considering dismissing her after reports for alleged misconduct. Guilfoyle has denied all allegations.
Speaking to Naftemporiki TV, Marinakis said the Greek Foreign Ministry had confirmed that the matter had not been raised with Greek authorities.
“According to information I received from the Foreign Ministry, there is currently no such request, nor has anything been discussed with the Greek authorities,” Marinakis said.
No Official Decision Announced
Trump recently said his administration was “looking at” removing Guilfoyle from her diplomatic post in Athens, raising questions about her future as U.S. ambassador.
Marinakis declined to comment on the American president’s remarks or related media reports, noting that no decision had been announced.
“We have no comment to make on statements or reports, since no decision has been made,” he said.
Greece Emphasizes Continued U.S. Cooperation
The government spokesman emphasized that Greece continues to maintain close cooperation with Washington, describing the United States as a strategic ally.
He pointed to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s recent visit to Greece as evidence of the strength of bilateral relations.
“We continue to maintain the highest possible level of cooperation with our strategic ally, the United States,” Marinakis said.
“We are monitoring developments and continue to cooperate at the highest level with the diplomats, the ambassador and the representatives chosen by the United States,” he added.
