Two Children, Woman Drown Off Lesvos

migrants.jpgeditedAccording to the Greek daily newspaper Kathimerini, the body of a woman and two children were recovered on the eastern island of Lesvos on March 15, from different parts of the island’s coastline. The body of the woman and one of the children were discovered in the morning and the second child later in the day.
Coast Guard officials are conducting searches by air and sea to locate other possible bodies. Authorities believe that the three victims were probably immigrants trying to reach Greece from neighboring Turkey amid strong winds.
On Dec. 14, 2012, off the coast of the island 21 people drowned after the small boat carrying them sank. According to Reuters, the boat had set off from the nearby Turkish coast carrying 28 migrants and its captain. It capsized 1,6 kms off the coast of Lesvos due to strong wind, according to a survivor, the police said. The Greek coast guard found the bodies in the sea and was searching for any remaining survivors. However, due to the bitter cold and the unpropitious weather no more survivors were found.
