On February 1st All Greeks Turn Off Their Lights To Protest Electricity Taxes

A new plan for protest action has been circulating on the Internet, calling all Greeks to turn off the lights on February 1, from 20:00 to 20:30 during the main news programme.
In this way, the people will declare their opposition to the new emergency taxes and electricity’s ever rising prices. “We say no to PPC price hikes. We oppose the way the Greek government is exploiting our public good of electricity” reads the statement.
The Spanish “Apagon”, otherwise known as black out, is an alternative form of protest, first employed by the people of Argentina in 2002, who reacted to the rising prices of electricity bills and basic public goods.
By putting the country in a state of darkness for only a little while, the organizers of the protest action hope to send their message regarding the unpopular policies followed by the Greek government amidst the austerity measures, such as cutting electricity to those who cannot afford paying the emergency real-estate tax.
