Greeks in Australia to Revive “Hippocrates Garden” On The Island of Kos

The Greek-Australian Kostas Alaveras from Melbourne is trying to promote the preservation of all the remaining plants and trees of “Hippocrates Garden” on the island of Kos, since most of them are forgotten and neglected.

The International Hippocratic Foundation of Kos is somewhat abandoned and Alaveras told ‘Neos Kosmos’ that its protection is essential, since it plays a dominant role in the cultural scene of Greece.

Moreover, Kostas Alaveras emphasized that the decay of the “Hippocrates Garden” happened due to the poor financial situation in Greece and thus he and many other Greeks in Australia founded ‘branches’ of the International Hippocratic Foundation of Kos in Australia and New Zealand, whose central offices are located in Melbourne.

Diaspora Greeks in Australia invite all Greeks to support their effort. The participation fee is $50 per year. The first event of the foundation will take place in Melbourne next March.

About “Hippocrates Garden” on the island of Kos
The cultural center Ancient House Hippocrates Garden is located in Mastichari, Kos Island.  It is an exact replica of an Ancient Greek Settlement in the 5th century B.C. It specializes in the revival of the ancient Greek way of life at the time when the great Greek doctor Hippocrates lived.

It consists of an Oikos, an exact replica of an ancient Greek house of this period, a Philosopher’s Arcade and a Stone Built Theater named Dancing Satyrs Theater.

In these buildings guests can pursue philosophical and spiritual matters and acquaint themselves with ancient Greek medicine and daily life.

On 5 acres of land near the Asklepieion archaeological area, 254 herbs that Hippocrates cited in his book and used to treat his patients have been planted.
