German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble signaled a softening of his country΄s position on the Greek debt crisis, saying Europe must make sure Athens can handle its debts, a newspaper said Friday.
“We must ensure that Greece can bear and finance its debts,” Schaeuble told the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, according to a press release by the newspaper ahead of an article in Saturday΄s edition.
It quoted Schaeuble as expressing confidence that Europe can “overcome the critical situation” and predicting a “quick solution” to the Greek crisis.
He rejected the idea of bonds issued by the entire euro zone, as opposed to individual governments, saying that would be a “mistake,” the newspaper said.
