Kasteli Airport Expected to Open by Summer of 2015, Crete

Kasteli is the first major infrastructure project Greece’s Socialist government has tackled and is considered to be one of the biggest investments the country needs to exit its debt crisis.
Kasteli will become its second-biggest airport after Athens El.Venizelos in terms of foreign traffic. It will replace Crete’s Heraklion airport ”Nikos Kazantzakis” which when closed, will be returned to local communities for a large urban regeneration plan.
The deadline for the tender was due to expire on Tuesday, however it is now being extended to October 18, according to a decision by the Infrastructure Ministry.
The airport, which is expected to be operational by the summer of 2015, is co-financed by the government, the EU and the European Investment Bank (EIB).
