Greek Festival of Sydney Presents “Nisos”

The 29th Greek Festival of Sydney in conjunction with Canterbury City Council proudly presents, for the first time at the Greek Festival of Sydney, the film “Nisos”. It will be shown outdoors under the moonlight.

The sell out success of “Nisos” during last year’s Greek Film Festival of Sydney makes it the ideal choice for the premiere screening of the Greek Festival Moonlight Cinema.

Nisos” is a film about scandalous affairs, unsolved crimes and hidden double lives. One small island can hold a lot of secrets. After the sudden death of the richest man on the island, all the secrets of the community are about to be revealed. With no one to inherit his estate he offers it to the four leaders of the village, the mayor, the police officer, the teacher and the priest.  However there’s just one catch.  To earn the prize they each have to read a letter to the public detailing their dirty little secrets

Gates open at 5.30 p.m.  “Nisos” starts at 7.00 p.m. or at sunset at Gough Whitlam Park, Bayview Ave Undercliffe

Senator Xenophon Campaigns Against Monopoly

Independent expatriate Australia’s Senator, Nick Xenophon, an anti-gambling campaigner and politician, is struggling against supermarkets’ monopoly. Mr. Xehophon believes that the government should take steps to put an end to monopoly, which can lead to obliteration of small companies and rises prices.

Mr. Xenophon’s statements followed a six hour “investigation” of Coles and Woolworths executives from members of Senate Finance Committee for the “milk war” brought out between them, leading to bankruptcy of milk producers and milk companies.

These two brands aim to use the same method for other kinds of food in favor of consumers. Nevertheless, the Senator supports that this is going to shut small supermarkets and and rise costs.

“The Australian” Newspaper Profiles Samos

A full-page feature titled “Sirens Invite You to Samos” is featured in the travel inset of “The Australian” weekend newspaper.  It profiles the archaeological sites and churches of Samos and focuses on the island’s ancient Greek heritage.

The newspaper’s editor visited the archaeological museum, the villages of “Manolates” and “Vourliotes”, where the monastery of Panagia Vrodiani is located, “Idrousa”, the archeological sites of “Heraion” and “Pythagorio”, the exquisite port with Greek taverns, cafes and pedestrian walkways.

The Economist: Greece, Ireland and Portugal Should Restructure their Debts Now

0

The Economist magazine said that Greece, Ireland and Portugal are on an unsustainable course but not for lack of effort by their governments as Greece and Ireland have made heroic budget cuts.
Greece is trying hard to free up its rigid economy, while Portugal has lagged in scrapping stifling rules, but its fiscal tightening is bold.
In all three places the outlook is darkening in large part because of mistakes made in Brussels, Frankfurt and Berlin, according to the Economist.
The magazine considers a measure of European leaders’ capacity for self-delusion the statement by German Chancellor Angela Merkel that the Euro-zone summit in late March was a big step forward” in solving the region’s debt crisis.
“Something between a fudge and a failure would be more accurate”, commented the Economist.
European Union insists the peripherals’ priority is to slash their budget deficits regardless of the consequences on growth. But as austerity drags down output, their enormous debts look ever more unpayable, so bond yields stay high. The result is a downward spiral.
“Greece should stop pretending that it can bear its current debt burden and push for restructuring. But the best hope lies with the IMF. Its economists have the most experience of debt crises. Some privately acknowledge that debt restructuring is ultimately inevitable. It is time the Fund’s top brass said so publicly and, by refusing to lend more without a deal on debt, pushed Europe’s pusillanimous politicians into doing the right thing”, commented the Economist.

Wasiliki Goutziomitros Presents Τravel Show on Swiss SF1 Channel

Wasiliki Goutziomitros

A very interesting travel series is presented on Switzerland’s SF1 TV channel. Journalist Wasiliki Goutziomitros is constantly “on the way”, like the title of her show: Unterwegs. From Greece to Brazil and from New Zealand to Costa Rica, Wasiliki makes us feel as if the viewer is there. With her unique smile and enthusiasm, she transmits her feelings and the experiences of a traveler. Apart from the pleasant atmosphere of the show, one can feel that Wasiliki looks deep inside the soul of each place she visits that she presents to her audience. Being a political sciences graduate of Zurich University and a journalism graduate from Maximilian University of Munich, she has the knowledge but also the talent to search for something more and different. The problem is that none of the Greek channels broadcasts her travel series.  The show is in German, but she could easily add subtitles even by herself, as her Greek is as fluent as her German!

Government To Publish A List of “Undisciplined” Entities

0

Greek government plans to deal with public enterprises that do not send financial reports, by publishing a list of them.
The Finance Ministry faces multiple problems. Measures worth €1.74b, caused by the deviation of 2011 figures have been added to the €22b medium-term package of measures, which was sent to IMF/EU/ECB on Thursday.
Late Thursday, after everduring negotiations with the Treasury, Hellenic Statistical Authority (ESTAT) sent the deficit figures for 2010 that appear to reach or even exceed 10% of GDP (from 9.4%).
However, data are still provisional and government’s conflict with the now independent ELSTAT and EU authorities is expected to continue until late April, when Eurostat will proceed with official announcements.
Government’s main headache is 2011 gap, which was estimated at €1.74b by troika. Greece was required to cover it within a quarter. But, revenues are lower than expected, while public entities still don’t send financial reports.
Sources note that Finance Ministry proceeds with the formation of a list of the public, enterprises, funds, hospitals, universities and municipalities that didn’t report their arrears and expenditure for February.
The same sources reveal that after the pressure that has been put on the qualified persons during last week, many of these entities finally obeyed instructions.

Cr Mary Lalios has been elected to the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV)

Mary Lalios

Councillor Mary Lalios, from the Whittlesea City Council, has been elected to the Board of the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) for the next two years. “I am very excited and honoured to be elected,” said Cr Lalios.
The MAV is a driving and influential force behind a strong and strategically positioned local government sector. It represents and advocates the interests of local government, lobbies for a fairer deal for councils, raises the sector’s profile, ensures its long-term security and provides policy advice, strategic advice, capacity building programs and insurance services to local government.
Cr Lalios is going to use her position to advocate for things that concern not only her electorate but are of importance to the community. This role will allow Cr Lalios to speak up for older Australians, and through the MAV argue for a continuing role for the State Government in managing aged care in Victoria, in response to the Productivity Commission’s Draft Report Caring for Older Australians.
The MAV represents Victoria’s 79 councils which are governed by 635 democratically elected councillors. All together, Victorian municipalities voted to elect 12 regional MAV Board representatives.
