Total coronavirus deaths have surpassed 14,000 in Greece on Wednesday, as 37 people with Covid-19 died in the country in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths to 14,014.

An overwhelming number — 95.4%– of those who have passed away with Covid-19 were over the age of 70 or suffered from underlying health issues.

A total of 2,198 cases of the virus were recorded in the country in the past 24 hours, and 607,356 cases of the virus have been identified in Greece since the start of the pandemic, including all those who have recovered from the virus.

Of the cases diagnosed in Greece in the past seven days, just 153 are associated with foreign travel and 1,947 have been linked to contact with a known case.

89.74% of those on ventilators are unvaccinated

A total of 16 of Wednesday’s cases were identified during routine Covid-19 testing of tourists at the country’s borders.

Currently, there are 390 patients with the coronavirus on ventilators in Greece, of whom 350, or 89.74%, are unvaccinated.

Of the 191 patients intubated currently, 82.1% are over the age of 70 or suffer from preexisting conditions. Their average age is 65.

Additionally, a total of 3,024 patients have been discharged from ICUs around the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Greece to crack down on fake coronavirus vaccination certificates

A number of hospitals have recorded incidences of healthcare workers submitting fake vaccination certificates in order to avoid losing their jobs after Greece mandated that all healthcare workers receive the shot.

The Greek government is giving health workers another chance to get their shots after protests erupted over the September 1st suspensions of 6,000 unvaccinated medical professionals.

If true, employees at the vaccination centers would have to be involved in the scheme. As of Wednesday, 10 vaccination centers are under investigation for issuing false documents.

Incidences of fake vaccination certificates have been reported in centers in Kozani, Aitoloakarnania, Crete, Drama, and Ikaria.

Administrators of the Gennimatas Hospital in Thessaloniki have launched an internal investigation into the falsified inoculation documents after a total of three healthcare workers and one administrative employee were found to have submitted inauthentic vaccination certificates to avoid losing their jobs.

While fines for forging vaccination documents only amount to 100 to 200 euros at the moment, the Greek Health Ministry is campaigning to boost the fees to 5,000 euros in order to fight the recent trend.

Allegedly, some unvaccinated doctors and healthcare workers in Greece have even submitted documents stating that they had antibodies for the virus from previous illness with Covid-19, which would exempt them from the vaccine mandate, despite never having been sick at all.

Some may have even used samples taken from patients with the virus and passed them off as their own.

499 coronavirus cases in Attica, 270 in Thessaloniki

Of the 2,198 new coronavirus cases recorded in Greece in the past 24 hours, 499 were located in Attica, home to the Greek capital city of Athens.

In the city of Athens, a total of 136 cases of Covid-19 were identified Wednesday.

In Thessaloniki, the second-largest city in Greece, 270 cases of the virus were identified on Wednesday.
