Greek Paratrooper in the Spotlight for Singing Patriotic Song During Jump (video)

The Greek Army announced on Friday that Manolis Bouhlis, a paratrooper with the Hellenic Army General Staff or GES is under investigation for breach of safety procedures during a scheduled jump exercise.

The video which has gone viral in Greece depicts Bouhlis singing the “Famous Macedonia” anthem (Makedonia xakousti) regarded as the official anthem of Macedonia, and used by the Hellenic Army since the Balkan Wars.
The news of his investigation by the Army angered many social media users who claim that the real reason for his persecution is not safety concerns but his choice of song.
Critics say that the Greek Army wants to tone down patriotic chanting not to offend North Macedonia.
In a Facebook post late on Friday, Bouhlis denied he compromised safety procedures and says his act was dictated by “pride, devotion, and courage.”
It is also pointed out that Evangelos Apostolakis, the former Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff and now the Defence Minister, filmed himself during an exercise jump in December 2018.
