Greek Community of Washington Honor Ambassadors V. Kaskarelis and D. Smith

Greece does not need a stable and strong government to protect its interests,” stressed Greek Ambassador in Washington, Vassilis Kaskarelis, who spoke at the 28th annual conference on Cyprus and Hellenic Leadership, organized by the PSEKA-International Coordinating Committee  “Justice for Cyprus.”

Kaskarelis was honored with the ‘Soil Prize’ for his valuable contributions to issues related to Hellenism during his long diplomatic career, as representatives of various Greek communities commented.

The Greek-American community recognized his support as well as his other efforts to further the cause of Hellenism while congratulating his counterpart, the American Ambassador in Greece, Daniel Smith, who was also honored with the same prize. The State Department’s Director of Southern Europe, Kathleen Allegrone, accepted the award on his behalf.

Mr Smith, in the letter that Mrs Allegrone read, mentioned the current financial crisis with which Greece struggles, expressing his personal admiration for the Greeks’ “courage and determination.” He added that he hopes Greece will overcome its obstacles and become stronger.

The purpose of the annual conference is to inform Congress about Greek issues, mostly the Cyprus problem. Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou made a detailed reference on this matter. Among the conference participants were mayors of Cyprus’ occupied municipalities who presented an informative documentary about Cyprus’ cultural heritage, destroyed and looted by Turkish conquerors.
