What appeared to be a shark was filmed swimming through a flooded Florida street on Monday, as days of heavy rain overwhelmed roads and neighborhoods along the state’s Atlantic coast. The unusual sighting occurred at a busy intersection in Fort Pierce, where vehicles passed near the animal as it moved through the water.

Franshara Napoleon recorded the scene near 25th Street and Midway Road while heading to pick up her daughter from school. She noticed movement in the flooded intersection and began filming. “I was in disbelief,” Napoleon said.

Shark sighting on flooded Florida street followed heavy coastal rainfall

The video shows a dark, fin-like shape breaking the surface as the animal splashes through the intersection. Napoleon believed she had seen a shark, although the animal’s identity has not been independently verified. The recording circulated later in the week as the region dealt with widespread storm damage.

Heavy rain began soaking the region Nov. 1 and continued into the following days. Preliminary measurements showed more than 23 inches of rain in parts of Brevard County. Fort Pierce declared a local state of emergency Nov. 2, warning residents that flooded roads and neighborhoods posed serious travel risks.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared an emergency in seven counties that day and expanded it to 14 counties on Nov. 4. The flooding also produced another unusual wildlife sighting farther north.

Alex Martinez filmed large tarpon swimming through submerged paths at Gleason Park in Indian Harbour Beach on Nov. 2. Martinez said one fish approached within about two feet of him before swimming away.

Rescue teams responded as flooding disrupted roads and services

The storm caused more than remarkable wildlife videos. In Palm Bay, officials confirmed the deaths of Joshua Bennett, 34, and Archie Richards, 78, amid the flooding. Emergency responders worked to reach people trapped by rising water.

State wildlife officers reported evacuating more than 190 residents in St. Lucie County and carrying out dozens of rescues in Brevard County. Flooding also damaged roads and disrupted schools and water service in affected communities.

Fort Pierce officials urged drivers to stay off flooded streets, warning that water can be deeper than it appears and vehicles can become stranded.
