Recent flooding in Thailand and Malaysia has captured an extraordinary video of a huge python, producing one of the most breathtaking and mesmerizing wildlife moments seen in recent memory.
This incredible footage of a reticulated python swimming through floodwaters in Pattani, Thailand, has left viewers amazed. Many believe it could be one of the largest snakes ever seen.
A clip of the snake swimming in the floodwaters has exploded on social media, being viewed over 10M times on TikTok and going viral across X and Instagram as well.
The reticulated python is the longest snake in the world
The reticulated python (Malayopython reticulatus) is a species of non-venomous snake and is considered the longest snake in the world, with some individuals reaching lengths of over 20 feet (6 meters) and occasionally exceeding 30 feet (9 meters).
It is native to South and Southeast Asia and is known for its intricate, diamond-like patterns on its skin, which give it the name “reticulated.”
Their scales display a stunning network of geometric patterns, usually a mix of gold, black, and brown, which helps them blend into forested environments.
These snakes are constrictors, meaning they subdue their prey by coiling around it and applying pressure until the prey suffocates. They feed on mammals and birds, and larger individuals can prey on deer or even wild pigs.
They are highly adaptable, living in tropical rainforests, woodlands, grasslands, and even near human settlements. They are excellent swimmers and are often found near rivers or in flood-prone areas.
Reticulated pythons are generally shy and non-aggressive unless provoked. While large, they pose little threat to humans under normal circumstances. However, in rare cases, very large individuals have been known to attack or even consume humans.
These snakes are both revered and feared in many local cultures. They are also sometimes kept in captivity by reptile enthusiasts due to their striking appearance.
Despite their size, the species is not endangered, though habitat destruction and poaching (for skin and pet trade) pose threats in some areas.
Giant anaconda disputes python’s crown
Some scientists believe that the world’s biggest snake is a previously unknown species of giant anaconda, which was discovered recently in the Amazon rainforest.
With a length of up to 7.5 meters and a weight of nearly 500 kilograms, this newfound species may hold the title of the largest and heaviest snake ever discovered.
The Northern Green Anaconda was found by TV wildlife presenter, Professor Freek Vonk, and is as thick as a car tire. “Together with 14 other scientists from nine countries, we discovered the largest snake species in the world, the green anaconda,” Professor Vonk said.
