Ioannis Varvitsiotis, a former government minister and one of the most prominent figures in the history of Greece’s conservative New Democracy party, died at his home in Athens on August 2, 2026 at the age of 93. He was one of the longest-serving and most influential personalities in modern Greek politics, with a parliamentary career spanning over four decades.

Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum, honoring his commitment to democratic values and public service. He is survived by his four children—Miltiadis, Eleni, Thomas, and Konstantinos.

Born in Athens on August 2, 1933, he was the son of prominent lawyer and politician Miltiadis Varvitsiotis. He earned his law degree from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Freiburg in West Germany, later obtaining his doctorate in law in 1960.

First elected to Parliament in 1961 with the National Radical Union (ERE) under Konstantinos Karamanlis, he remained active in public service for decades and was a founding member of New Democracy in 1974.

During the 1967–1974 military dictatorship, he engaged in anti-junta activities. He was arrested by the regime and held in solitary confinement by the military police (EAT/ESA) for nearly five months.

Throughout his career, he held several major cabinet portfolios, including:

  • Deputy Minister of the Interior and Foreign Affairs (1974–1975)
  • Minister of Commerce (1975–1977)
  • Minister of National Education and Religious Affairs (1977–1980)
  • Minister of National Defense (1989, 1990–1993)
  • Minister of Justice (1992)

He served as Vice President of New Democracy from 1993 to 1997 and was elected Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 2004 to 2009. He also served as President of the Konstantinos Karamanlis Institute for Democracy from 1998 to 2010.

Varvitsiotis retired from active politics in 2009, leaving behind an extensive legacy as a statesman, author, and political figure.
