A newly identified dinosaur from Zimbabwe is reshaping scientists’ understanding of early dinosaur diversity spread across southern Africa. Researchers say the discovery shows the region was home to several distinct ecosystems, with different dinosaur species adapting to local environments during the Late Triassic.
The new species, Musango matusadonaensis, was identified from a fossil skeleton excavated in 2018 along the shores of Lake Kariba in northern Zimbabwe.
It is the fifth dinosaur species discovered in the country and lived about 210 million years ago, when dinosaurs were still expanding across the world but had not yet become the dominant land animals. The findings were published in the Journal of Systematic Palaeontology.
Discovery challenges earlier view of dinosaur evolution
For many years, researchers believed the dinosaurs living across southern Africa during the Late Triassic were largely similar. The new fossil paints a different picture.
The study suggests southern Africa was made up of several distinct ecosystems, each supporting its own dinosaur communities. That diversity indicates early dinosaurs adapted to different habitats as they spread across the ancient landscape.
“Until recently, it was assumed that the dinosaurs living across southern Africa were largely the same,” said Paul Barrett, a researcher at the Natural History Museum in London.
Barrett said the discovery hints that many more prehistoric species may still be waiting to be found. “It suggests that what we’ve found so far is only the tip of the iceberg,” he said in a statement.

Unlike the giant long-necked dinosaurs that evolved millions of years later, Musango matusadonaensis was much smaller and more lightly built. It measured about 4.5 meters (15 feet) long and weighed around 222 kilograms (490 pounds), roughly the weight of a fully grown pig.
Researchers named the dinosaur Musango, using the Shona word meaning “living in the bush,” reflecting both the local language and the area where the fossil was found.

The fossil is one of the most complete dinosaur skeletons of its age ever recovered in Zimbabwe. Researchers uncovered well-preserved bones from the spine, ribs, arms, legs and feet, providing a detailed look at the animal’s anatomy.
Scientists estimated Musango was about 8 years old and nearly fully grown when it died. The bones also showed evidence of a serious injury or infection that had healed, suggesting the dinosaur survived the condition before its death.
Although its skull has not been discovered, researchers believe Musango was probably a herbivore or an omnivore. It likely fed on vegetation growing along rivers and streams.
Zimbabwe continues to expand its dinosaur record
The discovery adds to Zimbabwe’s growing importance in the study of early dinosaurs. In 2022, researchers described Mbiresaurus raathi, the oldest known dinosaur discovered in Africa. That species lived about 230 million years ago, roughly 20 million years before Musango. It stood about 1 meter (3 feet) tall, had a long tail, and weighed up to 30 kilograms (66 pounds).
Together, the two discoveries provide new evidence that Zimbabwe preserves an important record of the earliest stages of dinosaur evolution, offering researchers fresh clues about how these animals diversified before rising to dominate Earth’s prehistoric ecosystems.
