Greek-American Democratic Congresswoman Maggie Goodlander secured a second term in the US House of Representatives on Tuesday, November 3, defeating Republican challenger Lily Tang Williams in New Hampshire’s 2nd Congressional District.
The Associated Press declared Goodlander the winner at 11:05 p.m. Eastern Time. With 83% of the votes counted, Goodlander had received 164,609 votes, or 59%, compared with 107,850 votes, or 38.7%, for Tang Williams. Independent candidate Robbie Mahrou received 6,472 votes, representing 2.3%.
The victory marks Goodlander’s second consecutive defeat of Tang Williams, whom she also faced in 2024, when she was first elected to Congress. The district includes Concord, Nashua and much of western and northern New Hampshire.
Goodlander emphasizes affordability and opposition to Iran war
Speaking to supporters in Concord, Goodlander thanked voters for entrusting her with another term and pledged to represent all residents of the district, regardless of their political preferences.
“Whether you voted for me or not, I will work for you, all of you, with all my heart and everything I’ve got,” she said, according to the New Hampshire Bulletin.
The campaign focused on rising living costs, housing affordability, healthcare, energy prices and the ongoing war with Iran. Goodlander criticized President Donald Trump’s tariffs and military policies, arguing that they had contributed to economic pressures on American households.
Democrats retained both of the state’s congressional districts, with Stefany Shaheen winning the 1st District seat vacated by Chris Pappas.
Greek heritage and experience in Washington
Goodlander, who turns 40 on November 4, was born in Nashua and comes from a family with deep roots in the Greek-American community. Her ancestors emigrated from Avdella, a village in the Grevena region of northern Greece.
Before entering Congress, she served as a US Navy Reserve intelligence officer, advised Senators John McCain and Joe Lieberman, clerked for Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer and held senior positions in the Justice Department and Biden administration.
Goodlander is married to Jake Sullivan, former national security adviser to President Joe Biden.
