Elon Musk says artificial intelligence will create a new version of Homer’s Odyssey that remains faithful to the ancient Greek epic, following his public criticism of Christopher Nolan’s recently released adaptation.
In a post on X on July 22, Musk announced that Grok Imagine, an AI video generation platform linked to his artificial intelligence company xAI, will create a full-length movie version of The Odyssey before the end of 2026.
“Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer,” Musk wrote.
The announcement comes after Nolan’s big-screen adaptation of Homer’s epic arrived in theaters, introducing a new cinematic interpretation of the ancient Greek story. Nolan’s film, starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, was released on July 17, 2026, and has drawn significant attention for its large-scale production and reinterpretation of Homer’s poem.
Musk’s criticism of Nolan’s adaptation
Before announcing his AI project, Musk had repeatedly criticized Nolan’s version of The Odyssey, arguing that the film moved away from Homer’s original vision.
Musk specifically objected to casting and creative decisions surrounding the film, including the portrayal of Helen of Troy. He argued that some choices weakened the connection between the movie and the ancient Greek world described by Homer.
Musk later expanded his criticism, saying that the adaptation failed to preserve what he considered the essential spirit and accuracy of the original epic.
Those comments represent Musk’s personal view; Nolan’s film was created as an artistic interpretation of Homer’s work rather than a strict historical reconstruction.
