Greece is in the grip of its first major heatwave of 2026, with temperatures climbing toward 43°C (109.4°F) in parts of the country as authorities issue warnings over extreme heat, elevated wildfire danger, and health risks for residents and millions of summer visitors.
According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY), the heatwave is expected to persist at least until Wednesday, with the highest temperatures forecast in central Greece, Thessaly, eastern mainland regions, and parts of the Peloponnese. Coastal areas and islands are expected to remain somewhat cooler because of sea breezes, although temperatures there will also stay well above seasonal averages.
The prolonged spell of extreme heat has prompted authorities to implement emergency measures aimed at protecting workers and vulnerable groups.
Authorities Introduce Heat Protection Measures
Greece’s Ministry of Labor has announced restrictions on outdoor work during the hottest hours of the day in areas most affected by the heatwave. The measures apply to sectors including construction, deliveries, and other forms of manual labor where employees face prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
Health officials have urged older adults, young children, pregnant women, and people with chronic medical conditions to avoid unnecessary travel during peak afternoon hours, remain hydrated, and seek air-conditioned spaces whenever possible.
Municipalities across the country have also opened air-conditioned public facilities to assist vulnerable residents.
Wildfire Risk Increases
The intense heat, combined with dry conditions and seasonal winds in some regions, has significantly increased the risk of wildfires.
Greece’s Civil Protection authorities have placed several regions under heightened fire danger and urged the public to avoid activities that could spark fires, including burning vegetation or using machinery that may generate sparks.
The country has experienced increasingly destructive wildfire seasons in recent years, making prevention a key priority during periods of prolonged extreme heat.
Advice for Tourists
The heatwave comes during the height of Greece’s summer tourism season, when millions of international visitors are exploring archaeological sites, beaches, and islands.
Authorities recommend scheduling outdoor activities early in the morning or later in the evening, drinking plenty of water, wearing light-colored clothing and sunscreen, and checking local weather updates before visiting popular attractions.
Visitors planning hikes or excursions in areas with elevated wildfire risk should also follow any local restrictions or emergency instructions.

Meteorologists expect exceptionally high temperatures to continue for several days before conditions begin to moderate later in the week. Inland areas are forecast to experience the most intense heat, with maximum temperatures approaching 43°C, while coastal regions are expected to remain several degrees cooler.
