A US ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agent fatally shot a Mexican national during an immigration enforcement operation in Houston, Texas, bringing renewed scrutiny to federal tactics under President Donald Trump’s expanded immigration crackdown.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) identified the man as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national who officials said was living in the United States without legal authorization. DHS said ICE officers tried to stop his vehicle at about 6:50 a.m. on Tuesday during a targeted enforcement operation in Houston’s East End.
According to DHS, Salgado Araujo attempted to evade arrest, struck an ICE vehicle, ignored repeated verbal commands, and “weaponized his vehicle” while trying to run over an ICE officer. The agency said the officer fired in self-defense. According to federal officials, emergency personnel transported Salgado Araujo to a hospital, where he later died.
DHS says ICE agent fired in self-defense
DHS has defended the use of force, saying the officer responded to an immediate threat. The department stated emergency services were contacted after the shooting and that authorities are now reviewing the case. The agency has not released video to support its account. It has also not identified the officer who fired the fatal shot.
The shooting took place near Canal Street and Wayside Drive in Magnolia Park, a historically Latino neighborhood in Houston’s East End. Houston police said their officers did not participate in the ICE operation and arrived afterward to assist with traffic control. The incident marked the second ICE-involved shooting reported in less than a week. ABC News reported that an ICE officer fired a weapon days earlier in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania after the agency alleged that a suspect used a vehicle as a weapon and fled.
FBI and DHS open separate reviews
Federal authorities have opened two separate reviews. The FBI’s Houston field office is investigating a potential assault on a federal law enforcement officer, while the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General is reviewing the agent-involved shooting.
That distinction has drawn attention from local officials and civil rights groups. According to local reporting, the FBI inquiry focuses on the alleged assault against the officer rather than directly on Salgado Araujo’s death. Community leaders have therefore urged authorities to conduct a transparent review of all available evidence.
Rep. Sylvia Garcia, a Texas Democrat whose district includes the area where the shooting occurred, said investigators must independently verify the federal account. She called for authorities to preserve all footage, communication, and evidence connected to the incident. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office said it would work with federal authorities to review the evidence.
Family questions account of ICE agent shooting Mexican
Relatives and advocates have challenged the government’s version of events. Ronaldo Salgado, who identified himself as Salgado Araujo’s son, said his father had lived in the United States for nearly thirty-five years and worked in construction. He said his father was on his way to work and picking up workers when the shooting occurred.
“My father did not deserve this,” he wrote in a public statement. Family members and advocates also said Salgado Araujo had been trying to obtain legal work authorization. The Texas Tribune reported that a public records search found no Texas criminal convictions for a Houston man matching his description.
DHS has maintained that ICE targeted Salgado Araujo for immigration enforcement because he lacked legal status in the country.
