A Greek island is offering families a €3,000 ($3,500) birth grant for every child born there, in a new effort to support young families and strengthen its demographic future.
The Municipality of Nisyros unanimously approved the one-time payment for families who are municipal residents and permanent residents of the island when their child is born.
The grant is tax-free and is intended to help families cover the first important expenses of raising a new child. The municipality has allocated €9,000 ($10,500) in its 2026 budget, enough to cover three births.
“We said YES to the family, YES to the future,” Mayor Christofis Koronaios said.
According to the municipality, the €3,000 payment is the maximum amount allowed for a municipal birth grant under Greece’s new Local Government Code.
A €3,000 Grant and a Bigger Plan
The one-time payment is only the first part of Nisyros’ plans to support families.
The municipality has also set as a future goal a monthly payment of €150 ($175) for every child until the age of five. The measure is not yet an active benefit, but has been identified by the municipality as a longer-term plan for supporting families on the island.
If introduced, the €150 monthly payment would amount to up to €9,000 over five years for each child.
A Small Island Facing a National Challenge
The initiative comes as Greece continues to face a serious demographic challenge.
According to the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), Greece recorded 68,467 live births in 2024, down 4.2 percent from 71,455 in 2023. Deaths reached 126,916 in 2024.
For Nisyros, a small island with a permanent population of just over 1,000, attracting and supporting young families has particular importance.
The municipal grant will also come in addition to Greece’s national birth benefit.
Whether financial incentives can significantly influence long-term demographic trends remains uncertain. But Nisyros is making its priority clear: supporting families is an investment in the island’s future.
