Passenger traffic at Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” reached historic highs, with August setting an all-time monthly record. For the first time in the airport’s history, monthly passenger volume surpassed the 4 million milestone, underscoring the Greek capital’s steady momentum as a premier international travel and tourism hub.
Crossing the 4-Million Milestone in August
According to preliminary data released by Athens International Airport, 4.03 million passengers traveled through the airport in August. This figure marks a 3.7% increase compared to the same month last year, which had already set a very high benchmark.
International travel served as the primary growth engine. International passenger traffic climbed by 4.3%, while domestic traffic grew by 2.4%. Concurrently, total flight operations reached 32,799 movements compared to 31,503 last August, reflecting a 4.1% rise. This performance is especially noteworthy given the broader context of international geopolitical uncertainties and operational headwinds across the aviation sector.
Eight-Month Momentum and Higher Load Factors
The upward trend extends well beyond the peak summer month to encompass the entire January–August period. Over the first eight months of the year, Athens Airport handled 23.71 million passengers, up from 22.71 million during the corresponding period last year. In practical terms, nearly 1 million additional travelers passed through the gates, driving an overall traffic increase of 4.4%.
A particularly noteworthy trend is the divergence between passenger growth and flight volume expansion. While total flights over the eight months rose by 3.9% to 198,571 movements, international passenger numbers increased by 4.4% against a modest 3.2% increase in international flights.
This trend indicates that foreign traffic growth is not solely driven by additional flights, but also by higher aircraft load factors and the deployment of larger aircraft. In total, approximately 17 million of the 23.71 million passengers through August traveled on international routes, confirming the dominant role of global demand in the airport’s expansion.
Looking Ahead to the Fall Season
Following the peak summer surge, industry attention is now turning to September and October. Travel patterns this year point to an extended season, with airlines scheduling substantial international seat capacity to Athens through the autumn months.
