The fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Goode by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent has ignited a firestorm of controversy in Minneapolis.
While the Trump administration has characterized the incident as an act of self-defense against “domestic terrorism,” local officials are condemning it as a reckless use of excessive force. The scene of the shooting is about one mile from where George Floyd was murdered in 2020 by a city police officer, sparking worldwide anti-racism protests. Protests were being organized in other US cities, including New Orleans, Miami, Seattle, and New York City.

The Minneapolis shooting
According to eyewitness footage and reports, Goode, described by her mother as a poet and “the kindest person I know,” failed to stop her vehicle despite orders from federal agents. An ICE agent then opened fire, discharging three rounds through the driver’s side window. Goode was struck in the head and killed.
In the emotional aftermath captured on video, a woman identifying herself as Goode’s wife is seen in distress, blaming herself for the tragedy. “I made her come here; it’s my fault,” she is heard saying. “They just shot my wife in the head.”

Federal response: “Self-defense”
President Trump took to social media and public statements to defend the agent’s actions, labeling Goode and those with her as “agitators.”
“The woman driving the car was very tumultuous, obstructing and resisting, and then ran violently, intentionally, and wildly at the ICE officer, who appears to have shot her in self-defense,” Trump stated. The President further blamed the “radical left” for creating a climate of hostility toward law enforcement, asserting that agents are simply trying to “MAKE AMERICA SAFE.”
Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem echoed these sentiments, claiming agents were performing “enforcement actions” when their vehicle became stuck in the snow. She alleged Goode “tried to run them over” and classified the victim’s actions as “domestic terrorism.”
Minneapolis leadership hits back
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey expressed visible anger over the federal presence and the loss of life.
“What we are seeing are the consequences of an administration that aims to create fear and conflict,” Walz said. He noted that his office reached out to Kristi Noem but received no response.
“We do not need further help from the federal government,” he added, addressing Trump and Noem directly.
Frey accused federal authorities of attempting to “spin” the event as self-defense. After viewing video of the incident, the Mayor stated the victim did not appear to be trying to hit anyone. “This is an agent who recklessly used his power, resulting in a death,” Frey maintained. “They are tearing families apart and sowing chaos on our streets.”
The surge of federal agents
The shooting occurs amidst a massive federal surge. In recent weeks, the Trump administration deployed over 2,000 additional agents to Minneapolis. While the administration cites welfare fraud investigations as the catalyst, the mission has specifically targeted the local Somali community for deportation.
This follows a history of disparaging remarks by the President regarding the Somali population and his recent decision to block federal childcare funding for the state of Minnesota.
