For renowned journalist and Good Morning America co-anchor George Stephanopoulos, the journey of his family is a testament to the resilience of the Greek immigrant spirit. In a recent reflection on his heritage, Stephanopoulos opened up about the deep connections he maintains with his ancestral homeland and how his family’s history shaped the man he is today.

George Stephanopoulos: From the Birthplace of Democracy to America

Stephanopoulos, whose roots trace back to Neohori on his father’s side and Patras on his mother’s, emphasizes that the values of democracy were central to his upbringing. His family looked to the United States as a land of opportunity, particularly as the shadows of World War II began to loom over Greece.

His paternal grandfather, Reverend George Stephanopoulos, left his Peloponnesian village in 1938 to serve as a missionary priest in the American West. Meanwhile, his maternal grandfather, Andrew Chaffus, arrived in 1912, eventually finding stability in Rochester, Minnesota, after working his way across the country on the railroads.

During a past appearance on ‘Finding Your Roots’, Stephanopoulos uncovered a harrowing chapter of his family’s past: several members of his mother’s family were imprisoned for protesting the Nazi occupation of Greece in 1944. The revelation that his great-grandfather, Costas Nicolopoulos, and his children were taken captive by the Germans left the journalist “absolutely floored” and filled with profound pride.

Honoring Greek Tradition in the Modern World

Growing up the son of Reverend Dr. Robert Stephanopoulos and Presvytera Nikki Stephanopoulos, George was deeply involved in the Greek Orthodox community, serving as an altar boy and witnessing the dedication of his parents’ generation to preserving their faith and traditions.

Today, as a father, Stephanopoulos remains committed to passing that legacy on to his own children. “I feel like I get the best of both worlds,” he shared. “I’m fully American and fully Greek.” For Stephanopoulos, the story of his family is a reminder that despite the challenges of assimilation, the preservation of one’s cultural heritage remains a cornerstone of identity.
