Canadian flight bookings to Athens have skyrocketed by 50% year-over-year for June, signaling a massive summer surge toward the Greek capital.

“With summer finally here, Canadians are looking for destinations rich in culture, history, and vibrant city life—and Athens is quickly stealing the spotlight,” says Laura Lindsay, Skyscanner’s travel trends and destinations expert. “As one of the oldest cities in the world, its cultural and political legacy is legendary. Visitors are drawn to iconic landmarks like the Acropolis and Pnyx Hill, the literal birthplace of democracy.”

This massive interest aligns perfectly with Skyscanner’s 2026 Travel Trends report, which highlights a fascinating shift toward literary tourism. In fact, 24% of Canadians plan to visit a famous bookstore or library during their vacations this year.

“Athens’ deep literary roots, historic libraries, and independent bookshops make it a natural fit for curious travelers eager to immerse themselves in the cradle of Western literature and theater,” Lindsay notes.

Athens’ appeal for Canada tourists goes beyond ancient history

The city’s appeal goes far beyond ancient history, however. June marks the official kickoff of Athens’ vibrant summer festival season, when the city comes alive with outdoor concerts, open-air cinemas, jazz festivals, and buzzing, late-night patios. Travelers can spend their days exploring ancient ruins and their nights catching a world-class performance at the Athens Epidaurus Festival, watching films under the stars, or diving into the local nightlife.

Best of all, capturing this Mediterranean summer is surprisingly affordable, the report notes. According to Skyscanner search data, June round-trip flights from Toronto to Athens can currently be found for as low as $636. Western and Eastern Canadians can also find great deals, with round-trip flights starting at $847 from Montreal and $892 from Vancouver.
