Greece’s Minister for Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, Sofia Zacharaki, has announced the secondment of 156 teachers to Greek educational institutions of the Diaspora for the 2026–2027, 2027–2028, and 2028–2029 school years.
According to the ministerial decision, the educators will serve in overseas educational units while continuing to receive their regular salaries in Greece, supplemented by a special overseas allowance. They will be placed under the authority of their relevant Coordinating Education Offices for regional assignment.
The ministry noted that the decision was issued significantly earlier than in previous years. This proactive timeline gives educators and coordinators sufficient time to finalize placements, ensuring Greek schools abroad can operate smoothly from day one of the academic year.
“For the first time, earlier than ever before, we are giving Greek schools abroad the time, stability, and certainty they need to welcome the new school year with the necessary staffing,” Zacharaki said, adding that the initiative follows “intensive effort” to support teachers, families, and diaspora communities worldwide.
The announcement is part of a broader push by the Greek government to modernize Greek-language education globally. Zacharaki emphasized that Greek-language education overseas is a “national priority” and serves as “a bridge connecting younger generations with Greece.”
