The International Symposium titled “The Greek Language Online in Times of Crisis: Challenges & Prospects” concluded with great success at the Maliotis Cultural Center in Brookline, Massachusetts. The event brought together world-class academics to examine the evolution of the Greek language within the modern digital landscape, specifically focusing on the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and social media.
The symposium was co-organized by the Maliotis Cultural Center of Hellenic College Holy Cross and the “Greek Language, Culture, and Media” Unit of the University of Ioannina. Key partners included Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the University of Piraeus.
Key themes and insights of the symposium
A Living Organism: Scholars from Harvard, Ioannina, Piraeus, and Thessaloniki emphasized that Greek is a dynamic language. It is currently being transformed by “hybrid” writing forms and linguistic borrowing across generations—from Boomers to Gen Alpha.
The Power of Discourse: A significant portion of the dialogue focused on Strategic Communication. Experts warned that in the digital sphere, “no text is innocent.” They highlighted how critical thinking is the only defense against linguistic manipulation and the “weaponization” of language online.
AI and Education: Discussions explored how AI is reshaping linguistic literacy and social bonds. A hands-on workshop featured young researchers from the University of Montpellier (France) and Greek universities, advocating for a multidisciplinary approach to language education.
The event opened with a greeting from His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, delivered by Fr. Gregory Stamkopoulos, and was hosted by the President of Hellenic College, Fr. Michael Lambakis.
The Maliotis Center
The Maliotis Cultural Center at the Hellenic College of the Holy Cross in Brookline, Massachusetts is a touchstone for the Greek-American community in New England.
The cultural center at Holy Cross which is named after Greek immigrant Costas Maliotis is a tribute to all he accomplished after coming to the United States as a young man in 1915.
Maliotis, who started out as an owner of a restaurant, became an industrialist, a philanthropist, and a leader in the local Greek-Orthodox community. Residing in nearby Belmont, Maliotis was active in philanthropy in the greater Boston area and abroad.
