Greece’s Folegandros and Lefkada are gaining attention in Airbnb’s summer 2026 travel trends, as Gen Z visitors look beyond the country’s more well-known destinations in favor of experiential, less crowded corners of the country.
Airbnb’s summer outlook shows that smaller islands and less saturated coastal destinations are increasingly competing with more traditionally popular summer hotspots. Rather than focusing solely on Greece’s most famous islands, younger travelers appear to be seeking places where landscape, local atmosphere, and outdoor experiences shape the trip.
Greece’s Folegandros and Lefkada gain ground with Airbnb’s Gen Z travelers
Greece appears among the destinations benefiting from this shift. According to Airbnb, Gen Z travelers are not simply revisiting the same places once favored by millennials. Instead, they are rediscovering established travel countries through quieter and more distinctive locations.
Folegandros stands out as one of the Cyclades’ more rugged islands, known for dramatic cliffs, hiking trails, and a slower, bohemian atmosphere. Its appeal suits the broader demand for destinations that feel less commercial and more closely in touch with nature.
Lefkada, meanwhile, offers a different kind of Greek summer experience. The Ionian island is known for its turquoise waters, striking beaches, and a lively local beach scene, making it attractive to travelers who want both natural scenery and a more active coastal atmosphere.
The trend extends beyond Greece. Airbnb places these destinations in a wider group that also includes locations in Thailand, Brazil, Spain, and Tennessee in the United States. According to the company, these areas recorded more than a 20 percent increase in Gen Z travel interest for summer 2026, based on searches in the first quarter of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.
Travelers look beyond overcrowded hotspots
Another key trend for summer 2026 is the growing appeal of more affordable, less crowded, and experience-led escapes. One-third of travelers are choosing to stay closer to home, while rural and less saturated areas are gaining ground as alternatives to heavily-visited destinations.
Airbnb has reported that 86 percent of travelers (and 94 percent of Gen Z travelers) expressed interest in rural getaways. The figures come from a Focaldata survey conducted in January 2026 among 2,000 adults.
Although the survey focuses on US travelers, the findings reflect a general travel pattern that is highly relevant to Greece. Visitors are increasingly choosing destinations based not only on where they can stay but also on available activities in a particular destination.
This gives Greece a natural advantage, especially in places that combine beaches, hiking, sailing, local food, and distinctive landscapes. Folegandros fits this trend through its walking routes, cliffside views, and quieter Cycladic identity. Lefkada does so through its beaches, lagoons, coastal activities, and easy access to other Ionian destinations.
Why Airbnb’s Gen Z trends matter for Greece’s tourism
The rise of Folegandros and Lefkada in Airbnb’s summer 2026 trends points to a broader generational shift in travel behavior. Gen Z folks are not only looking for a place to visit. They are looking for destinations that feel visual, active, personal, and less predictable.
Islands such as Folegandros and Lefkada appeal to younger travelers who want beautiful beaches, hiking, local food, outdoor activities, and the feeling that they are exploring a less mainstream environment. Gen Z travel choices can bring new visibility to smaller Greek destinations and strengthen the country’s image as a diverse, experience-led destination as well.
