Greece is nearing completion of comprehensive archaeological works at the Acropolis of Ancient Pelinna, located in the Municipality of Farkadona, Trikala.

As part of a strategic initiative to protect and showcase the cultural heritage of Thessaly, this project focuses on the consolidation and restoration of the citadel’s western walls and its northwestern towers.

A history of Ancient Pelinna

Ancient Pelinna was one of the most prominent cities of the ancient region of Hestiaiotis, situated approximately 16 km east of Trikala. Its strategic location allowed it to flourish during the Late Classical and Hellenistic periods. During this era, the hilltop was transformed into a fortified citadel (acropolis), while the residential city (asty) expanded across the plain below, protected by an impressive defensive perimeter.

The city’s history was deeply intertwined with the geopolitical shifts of the ancient world:

Macedonian Influence: Pelinna was under Macedonian control for a significant period until the defeat of Philip V in 197 BC.

The Antiochian War: In 191 BC, the city was captured by the Athamanes during the war between the Seleucid Empire (Antiochus III) and Rome.

Roman Era & Decline: Following its capture by the Romans, the city gradually lost its regional prominence.

Byzantine Legacy: Despite its political decline, the site’s strategic importance persisted. During the Byzantine period, a settlement known as “Gardikion” developed atop the acropolis, maintaining continuous habitation through the early Ottoman era.

Preservation efforts and goals at Ancient Pelinna

Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni emphasized the significance of the site: “The walls of Ancient Pelinna represent one of the most important defensive structures in Thessaly. Our goal is to ensure the protection and restoration of this monument with absolute respect for its authenticity and longevity.”

The ongoing restoration, led by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Trikala, is addressing complex structural challenges. The citadel—built on a naturally defensible hilltop—features a trapezoidal wall layout. A highlight of the current work is the restoration of a powerful bastion at the northern end of the western wall, which features two defensive towers and an interconnecting curtain wall.

By transforming this historical site into a stable, accessible archaeological park, the Ministry of Culture aims to bolster the cultural profile of the Trikala region while fostering sustainable tourism and economic development for local communities.
