A significant earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale struck the sea region off the coast of eastern Crete.

The tremor, which occurred at approximately 6:18 a.m. local time, was centered roughly 11–28 km southeast of Ierapetra. Due to its shallow depth, the earthquake was widely felt across the island, particularly in the Lasithi and Heraklion regions.

While authorities are currently assessing the situation, there are no immediate reports of major injuries or severe structural collapse.

The Vice Regional Governor of Lasithi, Giannis Androulakis, confirmed that authorities have initiated contact with the Municipality of Ierapetra, as the epicenter was located just south of the municipality.

“Earthquake was felt throughout Eastern Crete”

“The earthquake was felt throughout Eastern Crete,” stated Androulakis. “We have placed the Regional Unit’s Civil Protection services on high alert and are awaiting further developments. While we are accustomed to seismic activity and rely on robust building codes, we are coordinating with local municipalities to inspect older residential areas for any potential structural issues.”

Seismologists are currently monitoring a significant aftershock sequence, with recorded magnitudes of 3.8, 3.6, 3.5, and 3.2.

The timing of the initial earthquake, which occurred as many residents were waking up to begin their workday, contributed to the widespread public awareness of the event. Authorities continue to urge residents to stay informed through official channels.
