In a display of bipartisan unity in the United States Congress, members of the House of Representatives introduced a resolution celebrating the 205th anniversary of Greek Independence. Led by Representative Gus Bilirakis and supported by a broad coalition of lawmakers, including Chris Pappas, Nicole Malliotakis, and Dina Titus, the resolution serves as a formal recognition of the “unshakeable bonds” between the two nations.
A shared democratic DNA
The resolution weaves a narrative that spans millennia, tracing the very concept of American governance back to the hills of ancient Athens. It notes that the American Founding Fathers drew direct inspiration from Greek philosophy, creating a “cradle-to-cradle” connection of democracy.
“The concept of democracy, in which the power to govern is vested in the people, was developed in ancient Greece,” the resolution affirms, noting that these ideals made their way across the Atlantic to shape the American political system.
In a poetic historical reversal, the text highlights how the US Declaration of Independence later “served as a source of inspiration” for the Greek revolutionaries of 1821, whose own constitutions reflected American democratic aspirations.
The 250/205 milestone
The timing of this resolution is particularly symbolic. It highlights a unique historical alignment. As Greece celebrates 205 years of modern statehood, the United States is preparing for its Semiquincentennial (250th anniversary) of independence. The resolution frames this coincidence as a testament to their shared endurance as “beacons of liberty.”
Greece as a strategic hub
While the resolution honors the past, its focus is firmly on the future. It paints Greece as an indispensable partner in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans, specifically citing:
- Defense Leadership: Greece is lauded for consistently exceeding NATO’s defense spending targets, investing over 3% of its GDP in security.
- The Alexandroupoli Connection: The resolution identifies the Port of Alexandroupoli as a “pivotal strategic and energy hub,” connecting the Mediterranean to the Balkans and Eastern Europe via the “Vertical Corridor.”
- Global Diplomacy: It recognizes Greece’s current role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (2025–2026) and its leadership in regional energy partnerships like the “3+1” framework with Israel and Cyprus.
Honoring the “philhellenes”
The resolution concludes by honoring the “philhellenes”—Americans like Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe and Jonathan Peckham Miller who fought for Greek freedom—and the modern Greek-American community.
The House of Representatives “commends the Greek people for their 205th anniversary of independence” and reaffirms that the Greek-American community remains a “vital bridge of friendship and cooperation” between the two nations.
