The Terrace Theater at the John F. Kennedy Center was transformed last week as Alexia took the stage with her sold-out Live-Arts performance, Cypriote.
Marking Cyprus’s Presidency of the Council of the EU, the evening was more than just a concert—it was a bridge between the island’s ancient roots and the modern world. The audience, a mix of international diplomats, US officials, and the vibrant Greek and Cypriot diaspora, was captivated from the first notes of “Kalos Irtan oi Xenoi Mas.”
Alexia moved through the performance with a “universal consciousness,” weaving together language, dialect, and collective memory into a deeply personal experience.
Alexia: A voice of heritage and evolution
Alexia’s presence on the world stage is backed by a pioneering career that has constantly defied genres. A Berklee College of Music alumna, she first rose to fame as a pop icon, holding the record for the highest-selling debut album in Greek history.
However, her artistic journey has since evolved into a sophisticated exploration of jazz, improvisational music, and cultural diplomacy. She has collaborated with legendary figures such as Mikis Theodorakis, Chick Corea, and Stevie Wonder, always using her voice as a tool for storytelling and social advocacy.
A personal mission
For Alexia, this performance was deeply rooted in her own history as a refugee from Famagusta. Throughout her forty-year career, she has remained a dedicated activist, working closely with the UNHCR and using her platform to highlight themes of displacement, identity, and human rights.
Cypriote is the latest chapter in this mission, framing Cyprus not just as a geographical location but as a living system of memory and continuous evolution.
“Sing, so we may be heard”
Reflecting on the night, Alexia shared: “I felt as if all of Cyprus was on that stage with me. Time became a continuous present, and I could feel the people of our history walking with me, forming a protective circle and whispering: ‘Sing, so we may be heard.’”
By blending ancestral heritage with a contemporary pulse, Alexia didn’t just represent Cyprus; she placed its culture at the heart of a global conversation. For those who missed the live magic, the performance was streamed worldwide.
