Russia has escalated its rhetoric toward Ukraine after reports of a drone attack on Putin’s residence in the Novgorod region, with the Kremlin claiming that dozens of unmanned aircraft targeted the site.

Officials say the drones were intercepted before causing damage, while Moscow argues the incident was intended to disrupt ongoing diplomatic efforts. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the military will determine how Russia responds, adding that the government “knows how and when to react.”

Russian officials intensify rhetoric after alleged drone attack on Putin’s residence

Senior Russian figures have reinforced a tougher stance. Dmitry Medvedev declared that Ukrainian leaders should “fear for their safety indefinitely,” while Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed that 91 drones were intercepted overnight.

Despite the heightened rhetoric, the Kremlin maintains that the reported drone attack on Putin’s residence will not disrupt communication between Putin and US President Donald Trump, describing their dialogue as grounded in trust. Moscow has also urged restraint in the Middle East after signals from Washington about potential further strikes on Iran, warning that escalation in the region should be avoided.

Kyiv rejects claims linked to drone attack on Putin’s residence

Kyiv has firmly rejected the allegations. President Volodymyr Zelensky called the claims “lies,” arguing that Russia is seeking a pretext for renewed escalation and attempting to weaken momentum in ongoing US–Ukraine talks. He warned that the Kremlin may be attempting to justify potential strikes on government facilities in Kyiv and urged Washington to respond decisively to mounting threats.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha urged the international community to condemn what he described as Russian manipulation surrounding the supposed drone attack on Putin’s residence, saying Moscow is searching for a false alibi to intensify military action. He characterized the narrative as consistent with previous efforts to blame others for actions Russia intends to pursue.

Diplomacy under renewed strain

With both sides standing firm, the episode has injected new pressure into already fragile diplomatic efforts. Moscow continues to insist the attack took place and that it reserves the right to retaliate, while Kyiv maintains that the story is a mere fabrication to justify escalation.

The result is a further erosion of trust at a moment when negotiations remain delicate and the risk of renewed confrontation continues to rise.
