A high-stakes meeting between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky took a dramatic turn when Trump and Vice President JD Vance criticized Zelensky as “disrespectful” during a heated exchange inside the Oval Office.

The two leaders had planned to finalize a major economic agreement and hold a joint press conference, but tensions flared and derailed the meeting. The White House later confirmed that the press conference had been canceled, citing the breakdown in discussions.

Trump raised his voice at Zelensky, warning that his approach to diplomacy was reckless. “You’re gambling with the lives of millions of people,” Trump said. “You’re gambling with World War III.”

“And what you are doing is very disrespectful to the country, this country,” Trump told Zelensky.

Clash over U.S. aid and Ukraine’s security needs

The confrontation underscored growing frustration within the Trump administration over continued U.S. support for Ukraine’s war effort. Trump assured Zelensky that military aid would continue but cautioned against expecting unlimited support.

“We’re not looking forward to sending a lot of arms,” Trump said. “We’re looking forward to getting the war finished so we can do other things.”

Zelensky, in turn, sought stronger security assurances, pushing for guarantees that any U.S.-backed peace deal would protect Ukraine from future Russian aggression.

Trump dismissed his demands. “You’re not in a good position,” Trump told him. “You don’t have the cards right now. With us, you start having cards.”

At one point, Vance intervened, criticizing Zelensky for debating these issues in front of the press. “Again, just say thank you,” Vance told him. Trump, however, appeared unconcerned by the confrontation.

“I think it’s good for the American people to see what’s going on,” he said before adding, “This is going to be great television.”

The major economic deals are still expected

Despite the tense exchange, Zelensky is expected to sign a major economic agreement with the U.S. aimed at helping Ukraine rebuild its war-damaged infrastructure.

The deal, establishing a jointly managed investment fund, would give the U.S. significant access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals.

Trump framed the deal as an opportunity for Ukraine to compensate the U.S. for past military aid. “We have something that is a very fair deal,” he said. “It is a big commitment from the United States.”

The agreement includes provisions for Ukraine to contribute 50% of future revenues from its natural resources, including minerals and hydrocarbons, into the joint fund.

The deal does not include specific security guarantees, a major concern for Ukraine’s leadership. Many fear that a rushed agreement could allow Moscow to regroup and launch another invasion once the fighting subsides.

Concerns over Trump’s Russia policy

Trump’s handling of Ukraine has drawn increasing scrutiny, especially following a lengthy call with Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. – Russia meetings in Saudi Arabia that excluded Ukrainian and European officials.

Trump has also questioned Ukraine’s leadership, at one point calling Zelensky a “dictator without elections” for not holding elections after his term expired. However, Ukrainian law prohibits elections under martial law.

As tensions between the U.S. and Ukraine grow, the future of American support remains uncertain. While the economic deal moves forward, Zelensky continues to push for firmer security commitments—a demand the Trump administration has so far resisted.
