Imagine conversing with the Apostle Paul about modern life. A groundbreaking educational initiative is making that possible! Utilizing artificial intelligence, the FollowingApostolePaul project aims to bring Paul’s timeless messages, derived from his letters, into dialogue with today’s world.

The project’s first video features an AI-generated Apostle Paul: gray beard, brown eyes, wrinkled face, dressed in traditional white and brown. Watch as he travels from Athens to ancient Corinth by wooden boat, disembarks at Kechria, and engages passersby on stone streets, sharing the foundational messages of Christianity. His realistic depiction is meticulously crafted from hagiographies and ancient texts.

A conversation with Apostle Paul across the centuries

“Our goal is for the Apostle Paul to personally connect with the audience,” explains Sotirios Despotis, a professor at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NUA) and the project’s visionary lead.

“We want him to guide people through Corinth, Philippi, and his other journeys, just as they were,” Despotis added. “More importantly, he’ll address crucial contemporary questions about freedom, our bodies, mental health, and true happiness.”

Despotis highlights a significant international interest in the Apostle Paul, particularly from American and Korean communities, a contrast to traditional academic conferences that often fail to reach the public. “Through my work with the Patriarchal Foundation for the Far East Mission, I’ve seen a powerful desire to explore the Apostle Paul,” he notes.

Paul’s profound impact on Western civilization

Despotis emphatically emphasizes Paul’s profound impact on Western civilization and the concept of individual rights. “Whether we acknowledge it or not, the bedrock of Western civilization and the emphasis on individual rights owe much to Paul. He assigned immense value to the human person, famously stating: “There is neither male nor female, neither slave nor free, but we are all one.”

Despotis speculates that a modern-day Paul would likely teach at a university focused on social or political sciences, or even medicine, rather than theology. “Paul’s Christianity isn’t solely about metaphysics; it’s about cultivating a political stance on life and truly discovering happiness,” he asserts.

“Paul’s core model suggests that a meaningful societal organization arises when we invert the traditional pyramid of power—moving away from dominance and instead embracing Christ’s model of self-sacrifice,” he explains.

“Despite his many achievements, Paul’s true pride lay in his wounded, vulnerable body. His message: systems built on authority and strength are temporary. Instead, we should invest in organizing ourselves through small communities, guided by a selfless, sacrificial love—a love of giving, not taking.”

Paul’s journey, reimagined for the digital age

The FollowingApostolePaul project aims to speak the language of today’s youth, leveraging social media and technology to present Paul’s travels and connect his teachings with modern challenges. Content is being developed in both Greek and English.

The project recently debuted in Corinth, coinciding with a multi-municipal agreement for the “Journey of the Apostle Paul” initiative.

The presentation highlighted Paul’s arrival in Corinth from Athens, where he’d left disheartened. In the Peloponnese, he was initially seen as a traveling sage. He built a life there, sewing tents with Aquila and Priscilla, all while spreading Christianity across the Roman world. It was also in Corinth that he met Phoebe, a key figure in the early Christian community who later delivered and interpreted Paul’s Epistle to the Romans.
