United States President, Joe Biden addressed the nation for the first time since Donald Trump’s historic victory on Tuesday night, delivering a 15-minute speech from the White House rose garden. The 46th president’s core message was about reiterating the importance of a peaceful transfer of power in January, and the power of respecting the democratic process.
Biden announced that he had already made a phone call with President-elect Trump and invited him to the White House, just like former President Barack Obama did after Trump’s 2016 victory.
“Kamala Harris ran an inspiring campaign”, said the President
From the White House’s rose garden, Joe Biden also used his address to the nation to praise his Vice President, Kamala Harris, for “running a historic campaign” for office.
He also asked Vice President Harris’s supporters not to lose hope in light of the election results. President Biden said, “You know, we’re leaving behind the strongest economy in the world. I know people are still hurting, but things are changing. Together, we’ve changed America for the better.”
Biden also said that in the 74 days that remain in his term, he will try to make “every day count”, as that is the responsibility he and Vice President Harris have to the American people. Joe Biden added, “Look folks, you all know it, setbacks are unavoidable but giving up is unforgivable. Setbacks are unavoidable, giving up is unforgivable.”
President Biden also recognized that it was a difficult time for his supporters, saying “You’re hurting. I hear you and I see you. Don’t forget. Don’t forget all that we accomplished.” He also said this presidency has been “historic”, because of what the American people have accomplished in the last four years.
During his speech, Joe Biden said the electoral system is transparent
Through his speech, Joe Biden has made it clear that the electoral system is transparent, and called for respect for election workers. He said, “I also hope we can lay to rest the question about the integrity of the American electoral system,” adding that it is an honest, fair, and transparent system that can be trusted despite the outcome.
He also highlighted the work put in by election workers, saying, “I also hope we can restore the respect for all our election workers who busted their necks, took risks to the outset.”
Finally, Joe Biden said that election workers should be thanked for protecting “the integrity of the election”, highlighting that many of them do it for the love of the country. Joe Biden is set to step down from office on January 20, 2025.
