After her loss in the 2024 US presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris delivered her concession speech at her alma mater, Howard University, in Washington DC. Harris did not address her supporters late last night but opted to address the nation and her supporters today instead.
Earlier today, Vice President Harris reportedly called President-elect Donald Trump to congratulate and concede the election to Trump. She emphasized her commitment to making the transition of power as peaceful as possible.
Kamala Harris will have to certify the election when the time comes in January 2025 just like Mike Pence did in 2021 after Joe Biden won in 2020.

Harris was welcomed by thunderous applause by her supporters at her alma mater, Howard University. She started her concession speech off by thanking her supporters and recognizing that the outcome of the election was not what they wanted or what they had voted for.
She thanked her family, US President Joe Biden and Jill Biden, as well as her running mate, Tim Walz, and his family.
Harris reiterated that she is very proud of the campaign that she and her team ran because they were able to bring together people from “all walks of life.”
Additionally, she emphasized that she would engage in a peaceful transfer of power, which she called “a fundamental principle of American democracy.” She explained, “This is something that separates democracy from monarchy or tyranny.”
In addition to this, Vice President Harris passionately proclaimed that while she “concedes this election, she will not concede the fight that fueled her presidential campaign.”
“We will continue to wage this fight in the voting booths, courts, and public stage”— Vice President Harris
In her speech, Vice President Kamala Harris reiterated that “the fight for the United States is always worth fighting.”
In a direct message to young people, the Vice President said, “To the young people watching, please know it will be okay” and called on them to continue on in their fight, saying, “This is not a time to give up; it is a time to roll up our sleeves.”
In her closing statement, Vice President Kamala Harris said, “I thank you all, god bless you, and may god bless the United States of America.”
Political analysts at large have given meaning to Vice President Harris’s speech, with many of them believing that she will most likely not fade away from mainstream US politics any time soon.
Now, it remains to be seen whether Vice President Harris will be able to take over leadership of the Democratic party or whether some other figure will emerge to do so.
