Samsung unveiled an exciting innovation at its yearly First Look event during CES 2024 on January 7th. The spotlight was on the world’s first transparent MicroLED display.

Although there is no information regarding the price tag, Samsung presented the transparent MicroLED display alongside transparent OLED and LCD models. The goal was to emphasize the distinctions between these technologies, according to Engadget.

In comparison to other LEDs, the MicroLED panel stood out for two main reasons. Firstly, it was much brighter. Secondly, it boasted a frameless design and its glass panel was more transparent. This enhanced transparency made it easier for viewers to see objects behind the display.

Based on the videos of MicroLED, shared by Samsung, the content appears almost like a hologram suspended in mid-air. The demo unit, standing freely, is remarkably thin, measuring just about a centimeter.

This slim profile contributes to the illusion of a floating screen. Furthermore, the images displayed are exceptionally sharp due to the high pixel density of MicroLEDs. At this point, Samsung has shared only one vertical video with EDM, as reported by Engadget.

Transparent MicroLED displays are less affected by surrounding light

A spokesperson from Samsung explained that transparent MicroLED displays outshine transparent OLED panels in brightness, as they are less affected by the surrounding light.

However, the downside is the current pricing scenario. Samsung’s existing non-transparent MicroLED TVs come with a hefty price tag of $150,000 for a 110-inch model. This indicates that it might take a considerable amount of time before these innovative displays become reasonably affordable for the majority, according to Engadget.

Nonetheless, Samsung isn’t the sole Korean company presenting a sizable transparent display at this year’s CES. LG, Samsung’s long-standing rival, unveiled the OLED T, hitting the market this year.

The OLED T stands out as the first wireless transparent OLED TV, boasting 4K resolution and LG’s wireless transmission technology for both audio and video.

This innovative product builds upon LG’s previous (non-transparent) M3 model, which made its debut at the previous year’s CES. What sets the OLED T apart is its unique feature. It is a contrast screen that smoothly rolls down into a box at its base.

The box can be effortlessly raised or lowered at the touch of a button, adding an extra layer of convenience to the viewing experience, as reported by Engadget.

The base of the OLED T serves a dual purpose, accommodating down-firing speakers that deliver a good sound quality. LG has mentioned that the TV will be available in standalone, against-the-wall, and wall-mounted configurations, offering users multiple placement options.
