Greece has topped the Conde Nast Traveler list of most Googled countries to travel in 2023, along with Rhodes topping the most-searched island list.

Greece Tops List of Most Googled Countries 2023

Google annually publishes its ‘year in search’ data, a report which shows what users have been googling over the last 12 months. Luxury travel magazine Conde Nast Traveler got an exclusive look at the travel section of the data, which shows the most-googled destinations.

The travel magazine said that Google had contextualized its data to take current events into account – for example, Tel Aviv was trending as a destination before the war began.

On the beauty of Greece as a country, the Conde Nast Traveler article said: “From the whitewashed island of Mykonos with its sugar cube buildings and iconic addresses to the jungle vibes of Kefalonia, known for its hiking trails and rustic villages, Greece is the destination that keeps on giving.

The article recommends starting in Athens, which it claims is home to some of the world’s best bars, to get a taste of the country’s “culinary masterwork.” The piece then invites its readers to head to a Greek island of their choice, whether Santorini, Corfu or Crete, according to Conde Nast Traveler, any would be “bound to impress.”

Greece not only topped the most searched country list, but Google data filtered by Conde Nast Traveller put Rhodes, A Greek island, in the top spot in the category of most searched cities and islands of 2023.

The article said: “Of all the islands in Greece to visit, this one is pretty special. After the tragic wildfires that purged the island earlier in 2023, stripping it of 15 percent of its land, Rhodes is slowly building itself back up.

“Visit the old town, where a maze of alleys weave around Byzantine churches standing strong alongside Roman ruins and generations-old restaurants.” The article goes on to say that Rhodes’ dramatic coastal cliffs give “epic views of powdery golden beaches spilling out into the Mediterranean.”

Adding that inline alpine forests are “perfect” for early morning hikes that lead to “crumbling hilltop castles and ancient ruins.” The island is still in recovery, but – as Conde Nast Traveller points out – the interest from travellers eager to support Rhodes is testament to the island’s beauty.

The luxury travel brand also published a list of ‘the best places to go in 2024’, which also included a Greek island group.

The article said: “Is there anywhere more popular that the Greek islands right now? In summer last year the Cyclades – an island group that includes Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, Milos and Ios – dominated social media feeds with beautiful blue and white backdrops.”
