Greek officer of the Hellenic Air Force, Squadron Leader and Flying Nurse Ekaterini Sigala saved a man who suffered an epileptic seizure while participating in a joint training program in the United States.

Exchange and training programs between Greek and US military personnel are an integral part of the continued and broadened cooperation effort between the US, Greece, and other NATO allies.

“Thank you, Captain Sigala!”

Aikaterini Sigala was participating in an English Language Program at the Specialized Aviation English Language Institute, a training course for both military and international US partners. While attending class, Captain Sigala and her instructor heard sounds and realized something was not right. A man had an epileptic seizure in the hallway, where he was found with a head injury. Thanks to Capt. Sigala’s quick response, the man was cared for until paramedics arrived.

The US Embassy in Athens warmly thanked Sigala for her service in a Facebook post, stressing the importance of such quick responses:

Squadron Leader and flying nurse of the Hellenic Air Force, Aikaterini Sigala, demonstrated her unwavering commitment to assisting others when faced with an emergency situation while attending an educational program in the United States […] at the Institute of Foreign Languages of the U.S. Department of Defense, which provides education and cultural enrichment for U.S. military personnel and international partners.

However, for Squadron Leader Sigala, the recognition she has received by the institute for responding to the emergency is in fact simply her everyday life and aligns with her personal mission of assisting others.

She commented that as a nurse she “never forget[s] to contribute positively to someone else’s life, even under the most difficult circumstances.”

“This day was one of those,” she said, “and I am immensely grateful to have provided immediate help and happy to know that this man is now safe and healthy.”

US and NATO allies hold joint military exercises

The US has moved more weapons and personnel into Greece over the course of 2023 for the purpose of facilitating shipments in the Black Sea. Just this week, the Greek and Israeli Defense Ministers, Nikos Dendias and Yoav Gallant, held a meeting to discuss ongoing and broadening military cooperation.

In the spring of this year, Greek and Israeli air and naval forces conducted an annual military drill in the eastern Mediterranean alongside other nations, such as the US and Cyprus. The drill has been dubbed “Noble Dina 2023.” Training focused on military exchange for training with an emphasis on joint action in multi-threat scenarios. The ability to act in unison is meant to increase defense capabilities for US and NATO allies such as France, Italy, Israel, and the UAE.
