A recent development is underway in the field of dentistry, challenging our long-held belief that we only grow two sets of teeth. Scientists are carefully working on a new drug that has the potential to facilitate the growth of a third set of teeth.

Moreover, significant progress has been made in the development of this drug, bringing us closer to a future where regrowing teeth could become a reality.

Clinical trials for this drug are scheduled to commence in July of the following year, according to Japan’s national daily news site, the Mainichi.

If all goes well during the trials and subsequent research, it is projected that dentists could have access to this new drug by the year 2030.

It is worth noting that tooth abnormalities at birth are relatively common, affecting approximately one percent of the global population, according to a study published in the journal Nature.

Aims to treat ‘Anodontia’ dental condition

The Medical Research Institute Kitano Hospital in Osaka, Japan, is leading a research initiative with the objective of developing a therapeutic drug to address a specific dental condition.

This condition pertains to individuals who, due to factors originating from their genetic or developmental makeup before birth, lack a complete set of adult teeth.

The absence of natural teeth, known medically as anodontia, is prevalent among those affected by this condition.

It is often accompanied by other genetic disorders, such as ectodermal dysplasia, which encompasses abnormalities in the hair, nails, teeth, skin, and glands.

Current treatment options for individuals with anodontia typically involve the use of dentures or dental implants, according to National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD).

‘The idea of growing new teeth is every dentist’s dream’

Dr. Katsu Takahashi, the head of the Dentistry and Oral Surgery Department at the Medical Research Institute Kitano Hospital, has dedicated his efforts to the development of this new drug since his days as a graduate student in the early 1990s.

Dr. Takahashi expressed his enthusiasm for the concept of growing new teeth, describing it as the ultimate aspiration for every dentist. He confidently stated his belief in the realization of this dream, affirming his determination to bring it to fruition.

Supported by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED), this pioneering dental undertaking seeks to provide a therapeutic drug for individuals afflicted with a condition known as congenital edentulism. This condition affects people who are either entirely or partially toothless.

A statement on the clinic’s website highlights the collaborative efforts of over 10 medical institutions and research centers across the nation, working collectively towards the successful delivery of this much-anticipated drug to those in need.
