The organizers of the Eurovision song contest have announced that the host city for next year’s competition.

Sweden secured the privilege of hosting the 2024 contest following Loreen’s victory in Liverpool with her song “Tattoo,” fending off fierce competition from neighboring Nordic countries Finland and Norway.

After triumphing in 2022, the host city for this year’s Eurovision should have been in Ukraine. However, due to the ongoing conflict with Russia, the competition was held in the United Kingdom – which came second in last year’s competition – on Ukraine’s behalf.

Malmo selected as host city for Eurovision 2024

For the third time, the city of Malmo, located in the southernmost part of Sweden, has been selected as the host for the contest. Previously hosting the event in 2013, it coincided with Loreen’s initial victory the year before.

The decision to choose Malmo was made through a rigorous bidding process within Sweden, evaluating factors such as accommodation, facilities for delegations, journalists, and broadcasters, as well as ensuring a welcoming experience for the multitude of fans expected to travel to the city.

“We’re delighted with the decision,” exclaimed Martin Österdahl, the head of Eurovision, expressing his excitement. He further stated, “We’re thrilled to be coming back to this lively and energetic city that has proven its capability in terms of venues and infrastructure, making it an ideal choice for hosting the grandest live music event in the world.”

“Malmö’s commitment to diversity, inclusivity, and innovation aligns perfectly with the spirit of the competition,” Österdahl continued.

“Furthermore, its compact size and well-developed transport infrastructure means everyone involved in the Contest, including delegations, media, and fans will be able to navigate the city easily.”

“Its commitment to sustainability and green initiatives also aligns perfectly with our own values,” he added.

Greece and Cyprus in the competition

Greece and Cyprus will certainly be hoping to do better in next year’s competition. This year, representing Greece was Victor Vernicos Jørgensen and for Cyprus was Andrew Lambrou.

Greece did not receive enough votes to compete in the finals but Lambrou was able to secure a place for Cyprus. Lambrou was just shy of the top ten, coming in twelfth place with the song “Break A Broken Heart” which received a total of 126 points.

Earlier this year, rumors surfaced that the Greek national broadcaster ERT may change the way that Greel Eurovision entrants are selected. These changes may include the introduction of a multi-show national final with televoting to encourage the participation of a broader Greek audience.
