Greece leads honeymoon destination ranking for 2027, ahead of Bali, the Maldives, Italy and French Polynesia. The country replaces Italy at the top, according to travel agency Forest Travel’s summary of the findings.
The annual Luxe Report by global luxury travel network Virtuoso draws on insights from more than 3,100 travel advisors worldwide. The report uses their knowledge of client preferences to identify popular destinations and emerging travel trends. As such, its findings reflect industry insights rather than actual counts of completed honeymoon trips.
The result builds on Greece’s second-place honeymoon ranking in 2026 report, when Italy held first place. That edition placed Bali third, followed by the Maldives and French Polynesia.
Celebration Travel Provides Broader Context
Meanwhile, celebrating a milestone remains the leading travel motivation in the 2027 findings. Celebration travel also ranks among the leading ultraluxury experiences, alongside all-inclusive experiences and privacy.
These preferences continue themes that Virtuoso documented in its previous annual report. Its 2026 findings connected birthdays, anniversaries and family gatherings with demand for private yachts and secluded properties. Additionally, travelers sought private transfers, personalized dining and exclusive access to guides and wellness specialists.
However, those broader preferences do not establish why Greece overtook Italy among honeymoon destinations. Neither a destination ranking nor a market-wide trend, by itself, demonstrates what drove an individual couple’s decision.
The distinction also matters when assessing the commercial significance of Greece’s position. Leading an advisor-based ranking does not establish a country’s share of worldwide honeymoon bookings or spending.
Greece Holds Fourth Place Overall
Beyond honeymoons, Japan leads the 2027 overall destination ranking, followed by Italy, France, Greece and Spain.
However, Greece’s honeymoon advance does not represent an improvement across every category. The travel network placed Greece third overall in its 2026 edition, behind Italy and Japan but ahead of France. Therefore, the latest order represents a one-place decline for Greece in the broader destination list.
The two rankings answer different questions. One focuses specifically on honeymoon travel, while the other covers destination preferences across the luxury market.
Greek Islands and Athens Feature in Rankings
Meanwhile, the Greek islands rank third among cruise itineraries for 2027. The Mediterranean leads, followed by Alaska, while Antarctica and the Danube complete the top five.
The Greek islands also occupied third place in its official 2026 list. That edition likewise placed the Mediterranean first and Alaska second, although the Danube ranked above Antarctica.
Separately, Athens ranks sixth among cities for 2027, behind Tokyo, Kyoto, Barcelona, Paris and Rome.
The survey also records optimism about luxury travel demand. Some 53% of advisors expect a slight increase during 2027, while 22% anticipate a significant rise. Likewise, 59% forecast moderately higher spending per trip, and another 13% expect a significant increase.
For comparison, Virtuoso’s 2026 release reported that 55% of advisors anticipated a modest spending increase. Another 28% expected spending to remain unchanged.
