The only survivor from the first carriage of the Greek passenger train that collided with a freight train on Tuesday is fighting for his life in an Intensive Care Unit in Larissa.

20-year-old Gerasimos-Iason Georgiadis is in critical condition, doctors say.

When the two trains collided he was thrown from the window and escaped the explosion and fire.

However, he suffered serious head injuries falling to the ground. He was rescued and transferred to a Larissa hospital.

Already, he has undergone two surgeries, with the doctors not giving up their titanic efforts to save him.

The 20-year-old, originally from the city of Volos, boarded the train in Larissa bound for Thessaloniki, as he is studying mechanical engineering at Aristotle University.

He had gone home for the long Lent holiday to spend time with his family.

His family has been spending the last four days outside the Larissa hospital hoping for good news.

His aunt, Olga Georgiadi, took to Facebook to express her anger at the tragic accident and tell politicians to shut up. “All politicians must shut up today. Only mothers have the right to scream…”, she wrote.

Many students among the victims of the Greek train crash

There were more than 350 people on board the passenger train, many of them university students going back to the northern town of Thessaloniki from the capital Athens after a long holiday weekend.

Police said 54 bodies out of 56 people reported missing by relatives had so far been identified – almost all from DNA tests as the crash was so violent. A 57th body has not been identified as no one has appeared so far to give a DNA sample.

Bereaved families have vowed to seek justice.
